Competition: Win tickets to see James Skelly & The Intenders at 02 Academy Liverpool

CORAL singer James Skelly has a fantastic new album out with his solo project James Skelly and the Intenders. This week they play the 02 Academy Liverpool and I';ve got a pair of tickets to give away to one lucky reader.

"It felt like the right time to do it," says James, 32. "I write songs all the time, so I can't sit around for too long or they end up building up and I get confused with what direction to go in. I think the songs on the album fit well together - I was listening to a lot of soul and R&B so I think that comes out a bit."
Convening a revolving cast of players that, as well as all the members of The Coral, included James Redmond of Tramp Attack on bass and members of The Sundowners on harmonies, James put down the tunes he had assembled live at Parr Street Studios in Liverpool.
"Alan Wills (from the record label Deltasonic) told me Parr Street had really improved, so I phoned Rich the engineer there, asked if I could have a free trial, he said yes, it went great so we did the album there," says James.
This weekend James and the band are playing their first live dates, including a headline show at the O2 Academy Liverpool.
"It's not a big tour, I'm easing back into it," he explains. "We're playing a few festivals as well, if it all goes well then we'll do a bigger tour later in the year."
The Academy has been an important venue in James's career.
"We supported the Real People there and Alan Wills spotted us and signed us to Deltasonic," he says. "The crowd always get behind you at Liverpool gigs - but the guest list is always massive."

We have a pair of tickets to give away. To enter our competition, retweet the link to this story by midnight on June 5 and make sure you're following @JadeWright so I can direct message you your prize details. Normal ECHO competition rules apply.
