Reviews of the new music from Laura Marling, the Killers and Beyonce
Laura Marling - Night Terrors 4/5 By Rikki Wright
Laura Marling is an enormously talented young woman, and this song showcases everything that is so exceptional about her. Her sublime voice and poetic lyric combine with staggeringly beautifully dark instrumentation that reminds of vintage Pentangle and Sandy Denny, Portishead and yet is characteristically her sound alone.
Wonderful stuff.
Beyonce - If I were a Boy 3/5 By Rikki Wright
A slim slice of slightly folky pop from Beyonce, not awful, but not really memorable.
The Killers - Human 3/5 By Rikki Wright
A rather run of the mill effort from the once mighty Killers. Maybe this represents a creatively dry patch for them, rather than signalling their demise, but let's hope their next one is considerably better than this. In fairness though, the song improves after a number of listens, and sounded better played live at the MTV Awards, and on Jools' show the other night, so the problem might lie with a production problem that sucks the life out of the recording.
