Reviews: We Are Scientists, Guillemots, Silvery and The Dykeenies

In this week's review column we rate the new releases from We Are Scientists, Guillemots, Silvery and The Dykeenies

We Are Scientists – Brain Thrust Mastery

There’s something of an INXS-like feel about this band, mixed in a test tube with some Brian Eno-esqe vocals and keyboards, and howly old guitar. Weird science? Probably, but the test results are positive. It is good melodious stuff, which grows on you like a bioengineered organism. 4/5

Guillemots – Get Over It

Guillemots offer this odd little pop song that sounds like an updated Bay City Rollers who’ve been listening to the Beach Boys. It’s ok, in a boisterous, mindless sort of way.
2/5

Jessie Alison

Silvery - Horrors/Orders

Plinky plonky piano driven track with a synthesiser making some whirly noises off in the background.
It’s reminiscent of a noisy version of The Tubes, The Divine Comedy or perhaps Sparks. Not great, but not rubbish.
2/5

The Dykeenies – Waiting For Go

Opening with an early Edge sounding guitar intro, this high energy post punk ditty from The Dykeenies is good for a spot of boinging about to. It’s little bit Green Day, a little bit Police, and quite a lot Skids, bringing the seminal ‘Into The Valley’ to mind. 3/5
