The Wombats on Capital of Culture and their top tunes...

Fresh from Jo Whiley's Live Lounge and countless ‘bands to watch for 2008’ lists, The Wombats are back in town for the Capital of Culture launch this weekend.

I caught up with Murph beforehand to find out how the lads are feeling about taking part in the people’s launch and the official opening at the ECHO Arena.
“We’re going to do Moving to New York on the roof of St George’s Hall,” grins singer Murph.
“The’re going to lift us up in a crane and we’re going to play on a roof with Ringo Star. Then we get to play the new arena with him. It doesn’t get much better than that does it?
“We did 273 gigs last year and this year looks like it’ll be even busier.
“But as soon as they asked us, we knew we wanted to do these gigs. It’s a big thing. We’re really proud to be from Liverpool, and we really wanted to be part of this Capital of Culture year”
I found out more about the music that’s been getting Murph through the week
“It’s been a nightmare, he says. “I lost my iPod in New York, so I’m going to buy a new one today. So I’ll tell you the first tracks I’m going to make sure are on the new one.
Interpol – No I in Threesome
“Their new album has been slated, but I love it. I love everything they do. They could fart into a mic and I’d still buy it. I used to have them as my ringtone, but my phone’s died so I’m stuck with a rubbish one with the Nokia tune til I can get a new one.”
The National – Fake Empire
“Go and buy this song now. No, buy the whole album, it’s amazing.”
Robyn – Be Mine
“This reminds me of the old-school 90s music that I remember from being a kid. It’s got a weird quality to it.”
Bob Dylan – Buckets of Rain
“Everything he does is just completely, ridiculously, good. This song is great. Maybe my favourite song.”
Elliot Smith – Angel in the Snow
“This is genius, his melodies are perfect. It’s witty, self-deprecating, just the kind of thing I like to wallow in misery to.”
Nick Drake – Which Will
“It’s an amazing song, with amazing lyrics. I could listen to it all day.”
