For One Night Only...

Every great band needs its thunderbolt, the charismatic rock god who joins the band, sacks the drummer, brings in a new keyboardist, writes most of their best songs, insists on playing all the guitars and singing and transforms them into something special. Oasis had Noel. The Clash had Strummer. And One Night Only have George Craig...

It’s just that most thunderbolts aren’t 12.
Formed in 2003, when singer George was yet to enter teen-dom, One Night Only started out as a bunch of school friends ‘just making noise’ in their rural hometown of Helmsley, North Yorkshire.
They went on to spend the following two years tearing the vaulted roof off the local scene.
They knuckled down, wrote some songs and 18 months ago, Steve Lamacq began playing the demo of You And Me, prompting the band to start taking themselves seriously. The teenagers quickly became subject of a fierce A&R battle and signed to Vertigo, home of The Killers and Razorlight, in March last year.
Now they’re heading over to Liverpool to show us what they’re made of. I caught up with George this week to find out about the music that keeps the One Night Only tour bus running.
Time for Heroes by The Libertines was one of the first CDs I bought. I first picked up a guitar after listening to it, and it always makes me feel kind of inspired.
“When You Were Young by The Killers is just a massive, epic tune. The first time I heard it on the radio it really blew me away. It really stood out against all the other music at the time.
“Our drummer Sam loves Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen, so he’d kill me if I didn’t choose that. We don’t get to hear much new music on the tour bus, so he’s always playing that.
“And I love Power Out by Arcade Fire. The instrumentation is amazing. The words are really good.
“Champagne Supernova by Oasis is amazing. (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? Is another of the first albums I bought and every song could have been a hit single.
