Family Folk-Up

The Family Folk-Up is fast making a name for itself as one of the most interesting musical showcases in the city. A monthly live acoustic music event, it’s hosted The Random Family at the best kept secret of Liverpool live music venues - St Brides Church on Catherine Street.

“St Bride's is a creative, progressive, inclusive church in the heart of Liverpool City Centre which has opened its doors to Liverpool's musical community, converting itself into a rehearsal space, recording studio and live music venue,” says Will, who provides vocals, guitars, mandolin, ukulele and bouzouki for The Random Family.
“Given the calm, peaceful, welcoming atmosphere, and the fact you can bring your own drinks, The Family Folk-Up is a fantastic and cheap alternative Saturday night out in Liverpool.”
This month’s Folk-Up will see guest stars Martin Carthy and Nancy Elizabeth joining the bill.
“Martin is one of folk music's greatest innovators, one of its best loved, most enthusiastic and, at times, most quietly controversial of figures,” says Will, “His skill, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers, not only from within the folk scene, but also far beyond it. Trailblazing musical partnerships with, amongst others, Steeleye Span, Dave Swarbrick and his award-winning wife (Norma Waterson) and daughter Eliza Carthy have resulted in more than 40 albums.”
Martin was the subject of the acclaimed Originals music documentary strand on BBC 2, and is credited as influencing a generation of artists, including Bob Dylan and Paul Simon.
Nancy Elizabeth has supported Josephine Foster, Regina Spektor, John Smith and John Renbourn, and not only writes and sings but also plays guitar, Celtic harp, Thai kim, recorder and anything else a little bit different on the way.
The Family Folk-up, featuring Martin Carthy and Nancy Elizabeth takes place on Saturday January 26. Doors 8pm. Tickets £6 adv from Probe Records or www.myspace.com/therandomfamily1.
