This year there are lots of bands bubbling away under the surface in Liverpool ready to take the world by storm.
In 2008 I predict there will be some arrivals that will dominate the charts and make their mark on the national music scene.
First up, The Rascals look set for great things. The Wirral trio, signed to Liverpool label Deltasonic, will be bringing out their debut album early next year.
Not only is singer Miles Kane’s voice amazing but he’s armed with some brilliant songs with a turn of phrase that goes straight for the heart. He’s also recorded an album with Arctic Monkeys singer Alex Turner, which will thrust him and The Rascals into the limelight in a big way.
Their former bandmate Eva Petersen is busy working on a project with Alfie Skelly (younger brother of The Coral’s James and Ian), which sounds fantastic. They’ve been busy working behind the scenes on new material for the last few months, and the results promise to be something special.
My money’s also on West Kirby lads The Hot Melts to make it big in 2008.
Singer Will Bayliss is a genius at writing quirky, timeless songs that you’ll never tire of hearing. They’ve just signed to Epitaph and I reckon next year is definitely their time to shine.
LIPA protege Eugene McGuinness is certainly one to watch. His distinctive blend of indie and acoustic magic is winning him fans across the country, and his forthcoming album on indie king label Domino promises to propel him to new levels of success.
Last year’s rising stars The Wombats have been steadily raising their profile this year, but following the release of their excellent debut album, it seems this could be the year that big things happen for the mighty marsupials.
There are also new albums expected from our more established acts – with offerings from Echo and the Bunnymen, The Zutons, Amsterdam, and of course the Number One Project album.
