In the next of our season of festive songs chosen by Merseyside bands we have Wayne of the Vagabonds extolling the virtues of this Judy Garland classic Christmas track...
My best Christmas song ever is Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (originally by Judy Garland) but I like the Frank Sinatra version after he changed the lyrics too.
It's quite a dark song and is not as full of Christmas joy and excitement like Here it is Merry Christmas by Slade but it takes me back to my childhood.
I used to live in a big house with 2 coal fires and I remember one Christmas after I had taken my Christmas eve bath, I was sitting in front of the coal fire.
I had a warm (milky) cup of tea in a plastic cup and a sheet of toast. I had already put out the carrot and whisky and put my sack at the end of my bed and I was watching a cartoon which started with that song.
I remember the cartoon started with a log canin in the snow and the song was playing. It zoomed in through the window and a man sat in front of his log fire all warm and it was boss.
I think I might make a milky cup of tea in a plastic cup this christmas and listen to that song on the wireless with a tear in my eye.
I also found out after watching Meet Me In St. Louis that Judy Garland sang the song in the film.
Garland starred in the film and added some of the lyrics. At first, the words were very dark and she didn't feel comfortable singing them in the scene, so she helped change them to lighten the mood of the song.
For Christmas I want a hang-glider because I want to fly and that's the closest to it. I would also like a blow up doll to take flying with me.
We have a gig on New Years Eve in the Korova and will be releasing our single on download in January. Check out our myspace for further info on that and all our 2008 shows.
