Great Christmas songs part 1: The Affection on Merry Christmas Everybody by Slade

In the first of our guest columns in which bands celebrate great Christmas songs, we have Chrisy from current Liverpool ECHO Unsigned Band of the Week The Affection talking about Slade's 1973 hit Merry Christmas Everybody...

"Slade's Merry Christmas Everybody is without doubt the finest Christmas tune of all time, this is not just my opinion it is FACT.

Historians have recently proven that this is the song Gavin (the first of the wise men) was singing when he arrived at Bethlehem, this is also the reason he had gold for Jesus, whilst the other two brought fancy smells, he had made a s**t ton of money off of it.

It's clear that somewhere along the line the tune got lost only for Noddy Holder to come across it, probably in a charity shop bible where he was shopping for awful clothing.

Have you seen the Top of the Pops performance that is constantly on a loop from November through til January every year?

Of course you have and you love it, the drummer can't play, he's just happy to be hitting stuff, the song has got him so excited he's like a pig in s**t.

About the only thing that could ruin this song would be a 'dance remix' by some two bit 'Producer' that has taken the 'ITS CHRSTMAS!' shouty bit from the end and looped it over a 4/4 beat, set to a video of gyrating topless girls that can be downloaded straight to your mobile, but even this would be amazing."

The Affection play their last show of 2007 at the Big Bang @ Zanzibar Saturday 15th december...thanks to everyone that came to see us this year, you were dead good.
