Those cheeky young whippersnappers are at it again. After just 10 gigs Wirral lads The Rascals are already being tipped as the next big thing.
With wickedly infectious tunes and a bucketload of charisma it’s hardly a surprise, but The Rascals – Miles Kane (21) vocals and guitar, Joe Edwards (22) bass and Greg Mighall (21) drums are clearly putting in the work to make sure their new venture is a success.
I caught up with the lads in between rehearsals
“We’ve just been on holiday to Majorca for a week – we’ve done nothing,” grins Greg. “We’ve been lying on a beach sunbathing.”
Although as it turns out, it’s not been quite nothing. they’ve been busy filming and photographing themselves in typical Rascal style. Their rehearsal room is pasted with photos of their adventures, and the home videos they’ve been shooting for years have come in handy for their first video.
“It’s all footage of us doing mad stuff,” laughs Miles. “We shot a lot of it ourselves, then we got a film-maker to do some for us, and they’ve cut it all together. It looks boss.”
The lads have also been busy recording their debut Out of Dreams EP, which is due out before Christmas.
“We’re really pleased with it,” says Joe. “Hopefully it’ll be out November or December time, and we’ll go into the studio around then to record the album. We’ve got loads of material written, so it’s just a case of getting it recorded now.”
Their first single might not be out yet, but they’ve already got plans for their second video.
“We want to do it like The Beatles did in Hard Day’s Night, where we get all these models chasing us down the road,” explains Miles.
“If we are going to rip anyone off, they’re the ones to go for aren’t they,” laughs Joe.
“We could get 50 girls to chase us through the streets of Liverpool,” says Greg.
“Not 50,” interrupts Miles. “We’d need like 150 top notch models. We’d have to cast it ourselves, make sure we had really nice girls.”
Would you get them to send in a CV and a photograph?
“We don’t need a CV,” laughs Miles. “Just a picture with their number on the back. That would be boss.”
As if he wasn't busy enough coming up with concepts for videos, Miles has also been away recording an album with his mate and Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner. For most musicians it would be a dream come true, but if Miles, the up and coming king of the nonchalant nod, is excited about it he doesn’t let it show.
“We just went to this farm in France and recorded it all in two weeks,” says Miles, in a tone that sounds like he’s been to Asda for a bag of frozen peas. “We did a bit of everything on it – singing, guitar bass. It’s kind of epic sounding, Walker-esque. We’re going to get an orchestra to put the strings on.
“It was weird, we lived in this cottage next to the studio. We didn’t leave the whole time so we went a bit mad, but it was good to be able to get so much work done so quickly, and it was a really nice place.
“There were loads of animals outside, it was a proper farm, and the fella who runs it used to cook our tea every night. You could ask for whatever you wanted in the morning and he’d go out and get everything and make it.”
Although not everything fitted in with the HE Bates rural idyll.
“The beds had fleas,” laughs Miles. “Al and I shared a massive room with six little beds and they all had fleas. I moved beds every night but they still found me. I had loads of bites on my ankles, and Al had none. I think maybe I’ve got sweet blood.”
The Rascals play Carling Academy Liverpool tonight, alongside the Hot Melts and The Suzukis.
