Candie Girl

She's got style, she's got songs and, it seems she's got more than a fistful of dollars. This is Candie Payne as you have never seen her before...
We’ve got exclusive shots from the video for her upcoming collaboration with Mark Ronson. One More Chance is a sensational tale of loss and redemption, accompanied by a sizzling video.

“I had such a good time making it, says Candie, 24. “I wanted to do a bit of a Bonnie and Clyde thing, looking at what would happen if they didn’t die and got arrested instead.
“We played around with lots of endings, like if she stole the handcuff keys and did a runner, but the director chose the final one. I’m not going to say what happens – you’ll have to watch it.
“It’s very different from the videos I’ve done before – basically me wandering around looking miserable, it was more story-based, which I really liked.
Plus, there’s that handsome chap...
“The guy who plays Clyde? He arrived on the day of filming and I thought ‘he’s very nice’, she laughs. “I didn’t choose him. There wasn’t a line-up where I walked along and picked out my favourite, but he was lovely.

Candie is hot property right now, her debut album I Wish I Could Have Loved You More has seen the West Derby star hailed as the next big thing by everyone from Jonathan Ross to Jools Holland. The upcoming collaboration with Mark Ronson can only add to that. How did that come about?
“Mark and I are with the same record company (Sony BMG, of which Liverpool label Deltasonic is a part) and he heard my album in the office and liked it I think.
“There was one song we couldn’t get right, and he asked if he could work on it. I was over the moon. I really liked his work.
“I went back into the studio and re-recorded the vocal and he worked his magic. It was all really quick. It’s very different now, I’m really happy with it.
“It’s a lot different than putting the last single out. With that it was more like dipping my toe in the water, now I’m being thrown in headfirst. There’s more expectation, it feels like people are watching this time. I’m more nervous, but it’s exciting.
The day I interview Candie she’s just come from a photoshoot for Observer Music Monthly with fellow rising indie star Patrick Woolf.
“It was fun, they got us to do some pictures together, he was lovely, we did a bit of an interview she says, like it’s the most normal thing in the world.
Whatever fame and fortune throws at her, Candie remains refreshingly down to earth young woman with impeccable manners. She’s completely unphased by the circus that surrounds the music business.

“These past few months have been really exciting, she says. “I’ve had some big milestones, things I thought I’d never got to do – Jools Holland’s show, Glastonbury, working with Mark (Ronson) – but it all rushes past so fast you don’t get to sit back and think ‘wow, that was amazing’ because you’re on to the next thing so quickly.
“I was off last weekend for the first time in ages and got to spend a bit of time at home, doing normal things, which was lovely.
Normal things?
“ Doing my washing, doing the dishes, stuff I don’t get to do when I’m racing around. The best thing is getting to see my family and friends, and sleeping in my own bed. I go into hibernation mode and just want to slob around.
When she gets chance, Candie makes a beeline indie fashion mecca Resurrection on Bold Street.
“I worked there for four years, so when I’m in town I always pop in, she says. “I buy loads of my clothes from them.
“I grew up a lot while I worked at the shop. I started when I was 17, so it was a really pivotal few years for me. I love it in there, and when I go to London, no-one got the same stuff. Liverpool’s great for fashion. I just wish I got to spend a bit more time here.
Candie’s new single One More Chance is out on September 3 on CD and 7", and downloadable from iTunes now.
