Yes, it really was as cold and wet and muddy as you’ve heard on Saturday at Knowsley Hall Music Festival, but over in the far corner from the main stage, The Maybes? played on the MySpace stage, and from the very first note, they lit the place up with their own brand of high octane, hard driving, loving-every-minute-of-it bluesy rock and roll..
Their cheerful exuberance, sheer ruddy marvellous musicianship, and those amazing stop-you-in-your-tracks vocals from Nick Ellis, The Maybes? meant I enjoyed their performance more than all the main stage acts put together…
They’re a little like the early Stones and Aerosmith, and there is more than a passing likeness to Jagger and Tyler about Nick Ellis, certainly in terms of charismatic frontmanship, as well as vocals, and the band somehow reminded me a little of early Led Zep, while dazzling with their own unique sound.
The damp bedraggled crowd were mad for them, and responded to the short but excellent set by dancing in the mud, and attempting to get over the crash barriers to get a bit nearer, and I can’t say that I blamed them, this was mesmerising stuff, from simply the best live band I’ve seen in a long time.
For now, you can download their entire excellent EP ‘Olympia’ for free on their MySpace page

Which has got to be a brilliant bargain!
Why they are not already headlining at Glastonbury, and topping the album charts is a mystery to me, but their time will come, and sooner rather than later. Not Maybe?. Definitely.
